Rest Is Part of the Plan

By Dr. Dana Plumb · October 2026

We are often very good at noticing what has not been done. The unread messages. The laundry. The work that follows us home. We are not always as good at noticing when we have been running on empty.

Rest is not only what happens after everything else is finished. Sleep, recovery time, and breaks are basic parts of maintaining health. When sleep is consistently short or disrupted, it can affect mood, attention, and physical well being.

Rest also looks different from person to person. Sometimes it is going to bed earlier. Sometimes it is stepping away from a screen, sharing a responsibility, or making room for an unhurried meal. A quiet moment does not need to be earned by completing a long list first.

Consider a small evening transition. Dim the lights, put your phone aside for a little while, or choose a consistent bedtime when possible. If your schedule changes constantly, focus on one part of the routine that you can reasonably control.

It is also important not to explain away ongoing exhaustion as simply being busy. Persistent fatigue, significant sleep problems, or other new symptoms deserve a conversation with a qualified healthcare professional. Rest is valuable, but it is not a substitute for evaluating an underlying health concern.

Your body is not a machine that needs to prove its productivity before it receives care. Rest belongs in the plan from the beginning. Sometimes a meaningful step toward feeling better is allowing enough space to recover.

Care that meets you where you are.
